BÖWE BELL + HOWELL Announces Green, “Lean” Mailpiece Production Innovation
BÖWE BELL + HOWELL (BBH) today announced the filing of a patent application for the BBH MAILStream Inveloper system, an eco-friendly mailing system that dynamically creates personalized bills and statements at significant savings over traditional mailpieces. The system and its innovative design enables the creation of documents in all standard formats on a single machine, delivers significant improvements in efficiency, and dramatically reduces paper costs and usage by as much as 40 percent.

The reduction in environmental impact associated with the MAILStream Inveloper is significant. As one example, BBH estimates that a mailer who processes 50 million envelopes in a year creates 44,500 pounds of wasted material. And although responsible mailers recycle these materials, there is a cost and waste associated with recycling that can be reduced or completely eliminated by using the MAILStream Inveloper.

"We believe this is the most ecologically friendly mailpiece format in the industry," said Mark Van Gorp, BBH vice president of business development. The system uses roll-fed material to create a universal mailpiece that replaces the traditional elements in a statement or invoice: the envelope, statement, promotional inserts, remittance and business reply envelope. Because the outside and business reply envelopes are eliminated through this patent-pending process, the waste associated with shipping, storing, handling and printing these materials is also avoided.

The new mailpiece is produced on the BBH MAILStream Inveloper, a high-speed system capable of processing up to 30,000 mailpieces per hour. Introduced at PRINT 09, the system is green and lean, supports transpromotional messaging, and provides radical improvements in efficiency and cost savings.

"We are extremely proud of these innovations, and given the customer benefits provided, we fully expect competitors to follow our lead," added Van Gorp. "Our new innovations represent the very highest level of corporate responsibility while delivering the highest level of efficiency. They also are available now."

BÖWE BELL + HOWELL University Announces Program Discounts through January 15

BBH University, BÖWE BELL + HOWELL's award-winning training and development organization, today announced a limited-time, 25 percent discount on its "Leading Mail Center Operations" program. Enrollment must be complete by Jan. 15, 2010, to qualify for the discount.

Leading Mail Center Operations helps mailers develop the leadership skills needed to effectively manage people, processes and systems in today's production mail environment. The course is ideal for managers responsible for the efficiency and productivity of their mail center. Alumni of this program have seen operational efficiency increase by 10 percent or greater after implementing the ideas and strategies presented.

"Because our trainers have decades of professional experience managing production mail centers, we have first-hand knowledge of the challenges that managers face," said Lana Chandra, BBH's executive director of BBH University and Organizational Development. "We bring our insight and practical expertise to the classroom, and I believe this personal knowledge of how best to run a production line is a unique and valuable feature of our courses. We're not just talking theory, but the practical application of industry best practices."

The course was developed after a number of years of onsite customer efficiency assessments. "We compiled all of the learnings and best practices that our consultants have engaged in and created a curriculum that distills this knowledge into easy-to-understand, hands-on training," said Chandra. "We're now seeing mailers faced with an increasing need for cost controls. This course helps managers learn how to weed out inefficiencies, coach and develop employees in using metrics to drive performance, and implement quality management best practices."

The program includes an introduction of the concepts of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma; employee coaching, motivation and engagement; production mail metrics, aligning metrics with business strategy, and using metrics to drive performance; and mail center layout, ergonomics and safety.

"What's unique about our programs is that we incorporate institutional best practices, including applicable concepts of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma, and apply them specifically to mail center operations," added Chandra. "This sets us apart from other vendors who may not take into consideration how quality improvements found in manufacturing environments can apply to the mail center."

For more information, please call 1-800-220-3030 or email BBH University at bbhuniversity@bowebellhowell.com. Additional program information can be found at http://www.bowebellhowell.com/bbhucourses

BBH Achieves New NetSort Milestones
Wheeling, Ill., April 8, 2010 – BÖWE BELL + HOWELL (BBH) today announced major milestones for the NetSort® sorting software solution. With more than 70 customers running NetSort on nearly 200 systems, and 11 of its multi-line optical character reader (MLOCR) system customers now achieving USPS® Full-Service certification for the Intelligent Mail® barcode (IMB), NetSort has evolved to a fully-fledged, proven technology in the market. In addition to these successes, BBH reports that 30 additional NetSort users are in the advanced testing stages required to successfully complete the Full-Service certification process.

Since launching NetSort in 2008, BBH continues to integrate user feedback into new releases, creating a robust solution for mailers who need to manage all aspects of Full-Service IMB implementation.

“We’re using the National Postal Forum to make a strong statement about NetSort and the success our customers are having with it,” said Mike Swift, president, BBH Postal Software and Sorting. “NetSort is the industry’s only end-to-end, single vendor solution for managing the requirements for IMB implementation. No other company can make this claim, and none can offer the flexibility and power we have built into this unique software offering.”

NetSort enables mailers to manage unique mailpiece IDs for the required 45 days across multiple sorters and sites. They can handle multiple tray/pallet/container associations, create and submit electronic mailing reports, and leverage other features that support USPS compliance and maximum discounts. Meeting new requirements for tray and pallet tracking is now streamlined through wireless short- and long-range scanners that read and upload data. NetSort also supports submission of Mail.dat 9.1 files with multiple CAPS accounts.

In addition to the technology, BBH provides the service and expertise that customers need to help them navigate through the complexities of postal regulations. “We create a true partnership with our customers,” said Swift. “Like them, we recognize the challenges facing our industry. By working together we help them succeed, and they in turn provide us with additional insights for product development or enhancements.”

“The entire experience of upgrading to be Full Service compliant was made much easier because of the BÖWE BELL + HOWELL people and products," said BBH customer Mark Kolb, vice president of United Mailing Services, Wisconsin’s largest mailing services provider. “Their expertise on postal matters, and the technology to achieve our business and postal objectives, was second to none.”

United Mailing Services and other BBH NetSort customers will discuss their experiences during the National Postal Forum, April 11 to April 14 in Nashville, Tenn., in the BBH Solutions Theater, booth #131.

Cogent Technologies' Model 5060 Speed-Dri Provides Line Speeds of up to 350' Per Minute

Cogent Technologies (formerly Research Inc.), an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of electric infrared heating components and integrated heating systems, introduces the newly improved Model 5060 Speed-Dri ink drying system. The Model 5060 Speed-Dri provides instantaneous infrared and convection technologies to dry ink printed on target areas up to four inches (102 mm) wide.

The Model 5060 Speed Dri makes it simple to add extra capability enabling increased line speeds. Designed for easy installation, low operation cost, and minimal maintenance, the system is an economical solution for improving throughput resulting in increased profitability.

An array of fast responding, medium wave quartz lamps provide infrared heat directly to the printed ink resulting in the breaking down of the boundary layer and immediate evaporation of the ink solvent. An integrated fan blows past the lighted lamps resulting in heated air impingement on the target product surface. Line speeds of up to 350' (107 m) per minute can be achieved using the Model 5060 Speed-Dri.

The compact Model 5060 Speed-Dri is easily mounted to most transports and measures 15" (381 mm) long, 11.81" (300 mm) high, 4.2" (107 mm) wide. Individual units can be mounted end-to-end to increase effective dryer length to 30" long (762 mm).

Two units can be mounted side-by-side to increase effective drying width to eight inches (203 mm). Adjustable or automatic heat is available using the Tachometer Input Circuitry. The optional Tachometer Kit is ordered separately.

The Speed-Dri is now available worldwide through Cogent Technologies extensive distribution network. Sales inquiries should be directed to Josh Nelson, Cogent Technologies., 7041 Boone Ave., Brooklyn Park, MN 55428. Phone: 763-795-8856.

Datatech SmartSoft Inc (www.smartsoftusa.com), a leader in mailing software and address correction technology, today announced that it has completed its integration with Aptify (www.aptify.com), a leader in association and membership management software, that will give Aptify customers the ability to connect SmartSoft’s AccuMail address verification product and use it seamlessly within their AMS software.

Inaccurate addresses cost organizations thousands of dollars every year in wasted postage, time, materials and lost marketing or fundraising opportunities, as well as hidden costs such as the impact on customer service and the potential damage to their reputation.

Seamlessly integrated within the Aptify user interface, users will enjoy greater deliverability for their mailings and all the benefits that accurate data brings to their entire organization.

“AccuMail saves our customers money by making sure that only the most accurate and up-to-date address data enters a database.” said Michael Shroyer, President of Datatech SmartSoft, Inc. “It costs much less to validate an address at the point of entry than to deal with the consequences later on. Aptify Vice President of Sales and Marketing Scott Stone said, “Aptify provides ‘out of the box’ integration with AccuMail, which enables our clients to drastically reduce the amount of time and resources spent verifying mailing addresses. Accurate mailing information is a key issue for our customers and we are delighted to offer this valuable new capability with AccuMail”.

DST Output Delivers Proven Returned Mail Processing
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif., May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Major mailers can now reduce undeliverable mail volumes and related print and postage costs, and stay better connected to their customers, thanks to a new Returned Mail Processing service through DST Output and its affiliate DST Mailing Services.

Since its launch last year, the Returned Mail Processing solution has demonstrated success in multiple markets. In one instance, a large mailer that formerly received more than 20,000 pieces of undeliverable mail per day (caused by incorrect, incomplete or old addresses) has realized a 31 percent reduction in returned mail and a 70 percent reduction in addressing errors since implementing the automated solution. Within six months of handing its returned mail processing over to DST Output, the mailer also was able to cut in half its number of full-postage mail pieces and achieve additional savings by reducing the numbers of required dunning notices and adverse action letters by 20 percent.

DST Output's Returned Mail Processing provides overall management of the manual issues involved with undeliverable mail, and also takes advantage of Full-Service Intelligent Mail® barcode technology. This enables clients to track how many pieces were undelivered and whose mail was returned by directly linking to account number, name, address and production details, which is valuable information that goes beyond what is available with manual processing.

With more insight about their undelivered mail, DST Output clients gain understanding and the ability to drive down returned mail numbers – and costs – even further. Some clients are now working on solutions to improve the way they communicate with their customers, which they couldn't do without the knowledge that results from this solution.

Each year approximately 1.4 billion pieces of First-Class Mail® do not reach their postal destination and are returned to the sender, according to mailing industry research. In addition, about 94 percent of undeliverable mail caused by the mailer is due to incorrect, incomplete or old addresses, and 40 percent of all database errors are caused by data entry mistakes. In response to these figures and in an effort to curtail its own costs, the U.S. Postal Service® is requiring mailers to be more proactive in maintaining address quality and providing Move Updates – or risk losing related postage discounts.
"Our objective in developing Returned Mail Processing was to provide clients with an integrated, turnkey solution for improved address quality and therefore reduced costs on returned mail," said Mury Salls, senior vice president of DST Mailing Services. "We replaced a manually intensive process with a sophisticated, automated solution that gives clients insight into their mail to more fully understand why mail is being returned – and what needs to be done to remedy that – and we are already seeing great success with it."

More specifically, Returned Mail Processing integrates with DST Output's comprehensive address quality services to resolve many address errors, provide regular reports and weekly transmission of electronic address-update files, and improve mail deliverability. The end-to-end solution also includes secure destruction of the physical mail pieces.
"Mailers need to minimize postage costs and gain every discount possible, so a key focus is on address quality," Salls said. "Our clients using Returned Mail Processing tell us that in addition to cost and delivery improvements, they recognize the value in capturing account information and data. With timely, accurate information they can set priorities and strategize on ways to improve mail deliverability and customer satisfaction."
