Washington, DC -President Barack Obama today designated Commissioner Ruth Y. Goldway Chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission, succeeding Dan G. Blair.
"I am honored to be Chairman of the Commission at a time of great challenge and uncertainty for the Nation's mail system," said Goldway. "I look forward to working with my fellow Commissioners to help steward the Postal Service through these turbulent times and to preserve an equitable, affordable universal mail system for the citizens, businesses and institutions across this country that depend upon it."
Chairman Goldway was first nominated to the Commission in April 1998 by President Clinton and currently is serving her third term as Commissioner, which extends through November 22, 2014. She has represented the Commission on the State Department delegation to the Universal Postal Union. Her advocacy and leadership were instrumental in the Postal Service's adoption of the "Forever Stamp" in March 2007.
Prior to joining the Commission, Goldway enjoyed a long career in public service and consumer advocacy, including service as:
--Mayor and Council Member of the city of Santa Monica
--Director of Public Affairs at California State University, Los Angeles
--Assistant to the Director of California's Department of Consumer Affairs
--Manager of Public Affairs for the Getty Trust, the largest arts and education foundation in the U.S.
Goldway earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan, and received an M.A. in English Literature from Wayne State University. She is a founding member and serves as Co-Chair of Women in Logistics and Delivery Services (WILDS), and is on the board of Tree People and New Visions Foundation. Her family resides in Venice, California.
"I am determined to establish and strengthen cooperative relationships with ordinary citizens, household customers and all stakeholders in the postal community to assure a vibrant and effective Postal Service in the years to come," Goldway said.
